Background of the Study
Wireless networks have become an integral part of modern academic institutions, enabling seamless access to online learning resources, research databases, and administrative platforms. Federal University, Gusau, like many universities, relies on wireless connectivity to support students and faculty in academic and administrative activities. However, the deployment of secure wireless networks remains a challenge due to evolving cybersecurity threats, unauthorized access, and interference issues.
A secure wireless network must incorporate robust encryption, authentication mechanisms, and intrusion prevention systems to protect against cyber threats. The increasing adoption of mobile devices, Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets, and cloud-based applications further complicates security management. Additionally, universities must balance security with performance, ensuring high-speed connectivity without compromising data protection.
This study analyzes the deployment of a secure wireless network at Federal University, Gusau, examining existing security vulnerabilities, network performance, and best practices for optimizing security while maintaining usability.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread adoption of wireless networks in academic institutions, security vulnerabilities remain a major concern. Federal University, Gusau, faces challenges such as unauthorized access, weak encryption mechanisms, and susceptibility to cyberattacks. These issues threaten the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive student and faculty data.
Traditional security measures, such as basic Wi-Fi encryption and password authentication, are insufficient to counter modern cyber threats like man-in-the-middle attacks, rogue access points, and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Moreover, balancing security with usability remains a challenge, as overly restrictive security policies may hinder accessibility and user experience.
This study aims to analyze the security of the university’s wireless network deployment, identify vulnerabilities, and propose an improved security framework to enhance protection while maintaining high performance.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the current security measures implemented in the wireless network of Federal University, Gusau.
To identify security vulnerabilities affecting wireless network deployment at the university.
To propose a secure wireless network framework for improving data protection and accessibility.
Research Questions
What security challenges affect the wireless network deployment at Federal University, Gusau?
How effective are the current security mechanisms in preventing unauthorized access and cyber threats?
What strategies can enhance the security of the university’s wireless network?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on analyzing the security of the wireless network deployed in Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It will evaluate encryption protocols, authentication methods, and intrusion prevention mechanisms. Limitations include restricted access to proprietary security logs and configurations.
Definitions of Terms
